in a world where one in four people have the innate ability to create magic (and just about everybody has the skill to use magic), most (if not all) cities are ruled by cabals. depending by location whether they operate more like street-gang or democracy, one rule is absolute: magic is wild, and to be able to channel that magic is seen as taming the beast. those who are lesser than magic users — beings such as shifters, the undead, those not-quite human — are seen as filth and unclean, barely above their monstrous natures. while some cabals are more lenient than others, most operate by one rule. coral them, give them slums to live in; if they disobey, execute them like livestock. originally from a cabal in las vegas named house moroi, reese is a lycanthrope. she wasn't born one — bitten by her highschool sweetheart, declan, at the age of sixteen, she continued to grow under the care of his pack. both betas, they lived a quiet life until house moroi decimated the group, leaving one of moroi's top shifter-slaves as alpha. kicked out of the pack (and a beta turned tail is just an omega), reese ran and moved to life on the streets. there were slim pickings in the slums; by the age of twenty two, she had joined up with house moroi out of necessity and to avoid death by starvation. there she was collared, enslaved and abused, resulting in more-than-aggressive tendencies, adapted beast-like behavior (such as the need to feed on raw meat, though she is biologically wired to exist on other forms of sustenance), and an inability to fully shape into a wolf. the queen of house moroi saw fit to use her how she wanted — first, a slave, then a bodyguard, then a plaything. reese operates on base instincts — flight or fight, fuck or feed — and has an implant of small, crystal-like lodestones down her spine in tether to her forced loyalty to house moroi. |
